Learning on Mechanisms of Cancer and Aging in zebrafish, Valeria Di Giacomo

Valeria di Giacomo (ZeClinics-Spain to UCD-Ireland)

Valeria Di Giacomo is an expert in the field of oncology and uses of mouse and zebrafish animal models. Graduated in Biotechnology, Valeria received the Master in Medical Biotechnology in March 2008 by the University of Bologna. From May to December 2007, she completed her Master thesis project in the Department of Developmental Biology and Stem Cells at the Hubrecht Institute, Utrecht, The Netherlands. From September 2008 to July 2009, she worked as an associate researcher in the Department of Pediatric Oncology at Sant’Orsola Hospital, Bologna. In September 2009, Valeria began her PhD in the group “Mechanisms of Cancer and Aging” at the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), Barcelona, funded by a private scholarship for international PhD programs from La Caixa. In December 2014 she obtained her PhD in Biomedicine. From December 2014 to June 2015, Valeria made a Postdoc in the same group with the objective of finishing the project and publishing an article as first name.

Finally, in September 2015, she began working as Project Manager for the oncology area at ZeClinics. Through her participation in 3D-NEONET and in collaboration with UCD, novel cancer models will be developed using xenotransplants of human colorectal tumour cells in zebrafish embryos. These models can help to understand many aspects of the disease like tumour invasion or response to therapeutics.
